Jocelyn Benson and Winnie Brinks became the first pair of consecutive female governors in Michigan history after winning the election.
The two candidates also constituted the state's first all-female gubernatorial ticket. Benson, currently serving as Secretary of State, and Brinks, the Michigan Senate Majority Leader, secured victory on Election Day.
Benson addressed supporters on Wednesday morning regarding her immediate plans for the administration. She stated that the transition process begins immediately, with a focus on identifying areas for quick relief in the early days of the term. The governor-elect said the administration will begin with bills that affect family monthly expenses. She noted that voters gave a mandate to lower costs, grow the economy, and improve public schools. Benson pledged to work with legislative leaders on both sides of the aisle to meet that mandate.
Benson announced a 15-member transition council to prepare her administration for these priorities. The group includes Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Huntington Bank Chairman Gary Torgow, former U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, and U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin. The council comprises leaders from across the state.
Business owners and voters expressed support for the new leadership. Amelie Boulanger, co-owner of Washed Up Coffee in Midtown Detroit, commented on the historical nature of the election. She said, "It's really cool to be a part of history when it's something that hopefully when our daughter grows up, it's just like well of course there's a female governor, and of course it's back-to-back."
Jenna Dredi, owner of Hair. A Salon, described the event as exciting. She remarked, "I think it's really exciting, anytime you're breaking a wall down I think it comes with its own victory." Dredi added, "Let's all now just move forward and see how we can all work together."
Benson attended a campaign party on Tuesday before speaking to the public on Wednesday. The transition team is now active as the administration prepares for the start of the new term.
