The Tampa Bay Rays are facing a steep statistical hurdle after winning Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday night.
Playing at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Rays defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in 12 innings. This victory snapped an eight-game winning streak for Milwaukee and kept the series alive. The Rays now trail the Brewers 3-1 in the best-of-seven matchup. Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern time, also at Tropicana Field. Jacob Misiorowski, the favorite for the National League Cy Young Award, is slated to start for the Brewers.
The Rays have dropped the first two games at American Family Field and lost the first game at home before securing the win on Tuesday. This result ends a potential sweep by Milwaukee, who sought to become the second team in history to win both a league championship series and the World Series by sweeping.
Tampa Bay has joined a rare club in postseason history. They are the fifth team in 26 instances to win the fourth game after falling behind 3-0 in the World Series. The previous four teams in this position lost Game 5. In a wider look at all seven-game postseason series, only one team has ever recovered from a 3-0 deficit: the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series.
The Brewers are now one win away from their first championship in this series. The Rays must win the next three games to force a decisive Game 7, or two games to force a Game 6 depending on the outcome of the upcoming matchup.
