Residents of Wisconsin finally hold a World Series trophy after the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 on Wednesday. The victory at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, marks the first championship in the franchise's history. Thousands of fans traveled to the state to support the team, turning the venue into a hub of celebration for the home crowd.

The path to this moment spans four decades. In 1982, the Brewers faced the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. The Cubs held a 3-2 lead after Game 5, a result that prompted editorial cartoonist Jeff MacNelly to draw a famous image for the Chicago Tribune. The cartoon depicted a smiling Cubs fan wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a team cap, surrounded by bulky Brewers fans in parkas at County Stadium. The caption read, 'Hope springs eternal ..'

MacNelly, who won two Pulitzer Prizes for editorial cartooning, used the image to poke fun at the Cubs, a team owned by the Tribune Co. that had not won a National League pennant in 37 years. The drawing became an instant classic and was printed on T-shirts for years. At the time, the Brewers and Cubs were in different leagues, so the rivalry was not yet established. The Brewers eventually lost the 1982 series in seven games, leaving the team without a title for 44 years.

The current series followed a similar trajectory to the 1982 matchup in terms of tension, though the dynamics have shifted. The Cubs ended their own title drought in 2016 and have since competed with the Brewers in the National League Central division. This season, the Brewers entered Game 5 with a 3-1 lead over the Rays. However, they lost Game 4 on Tuesday in 12 innings, surrendering a one-run lead in a 4-3 defeat. The loss brought the series to a critical juncture, though the Brewers had not dropped a 3-0 lead before.

Fans in Milwaukee, known for their Cheesehead hats, expressed palpable anxiety following the Game 4 loss. Many waited nervously for the outcome of the next game, fearing the team might falter after establishing a commanding lead. The atmosphere in St. Petersburg reflected this mix of anticipation and stress, with supporters hoping the team would close out the series without another extended inning.

The Brewers won Game 5 to claim the championship. This victory ends a 44-year wait for the franchise. The team now stands as the sole World Series champions from Milwaukee. The Rays, who had pushed the series to Game 5, will now look to return to the Fall Classic in the future. The Brewers' victory solidifies their status as a competitive force in the National League, having overcome the anxiety that plagued fans in the days following their Game 4 stumble.

The connection to the 1982 cartoon remains a point of reference for fans and media alike. MacNelly, who died in 2000 at age 53, is remembered for his ability to capture the spirit of baseball fandom. His work from 1982 is often cited as a representation of the enduring optimism of fans from teams with long title droughts. With the Brewers' win, that optimism has been realized for the first time in the club's history.
