The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-21 on Monday night, ending a stretch of low-scoring games with a balanced offensive performance.
Javonte Williams rushed for 155 yards on the day, the first time a Cowboys player has reached the 150-yard rushing mark since 2018. The team recorded 204 total yards on the ground, a figure achieved only once previously under head coach Brian Schottenheimer. This statistical shift follows a period where quarterback Dak Prescott posted his lowest combined scoring total in consecutive games since 2019, largely due to a stalled running game.
Owner and general manager Jerry Jones discussed the tactical implications of the run game on his radio show on Tuesday morning. Jones stated that the rushing attack allows Prescott to operate from under center with greater frequency. He noted that this formation change presents a distinct defensive challenge for opponents.
Despite Jones' emphasis on the run, the team's highest-paid players drove much of the scoring output. Prescott completed 15 passes for three touchdowns. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb finished with two touchdowns and 12 targets. George Pickens also scored, securing a reception in the end zone while keeping his second foot inside the boundary. Pickens received 12 targets, half the volume of Lamb, though he recorded his only 100-yard receiving game this season when Lamb left the field with an injury against Tampa Bay.
Prescott commented on Pickens' role during his postgame remarks. He explained that defenses focus their attention on Lamb due to his big-play ability. Prescott said he attempted to create opportunities for Pickens, citing the receiver's catch and toe-tap as a standout moment.
Schottenheimer's offense generated a season-high 416 total yards. The head coach was concise during his postgame press conference, a demeanor noted by reporters following a week of scrutiny regarding his job security. Prescott defended the coach's reaction to external pressure, stating that Schottenheimer takes pride in his role and the team's performance.
Defensive issues persisted despite the win. Dallas remains last in the NFL, allowing opponents a 52.9% conversion rate on third down. On the opening drive of the third quarter, Philadelphia advanced 84 yards on 17 plays to take a 21-20 lead. The Eagles converted four of five third-down attempts and a fourth-and-one situation on that drive. Five of the Cowboys' seven penalties in the first half were charged to the defense, with four resulting in first downs for Philadelphia.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown returned from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for five games. He recorded a diving interception in the fourth quarter. Rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham played a season-low 21 snaps, while Shemar James tied for the team lead with 58 defensive snaps. Cornerback Cobie Durant, returning from a four-game absence, also played the full game without reported issues.
Lamb has two two-touchdown games this season, a mark he did not achieve last year. He is tied with Green Bay's Christian Watson for second in the league with six receiving touchdowns, trailing Seattle's Jaxon Smith-Njigba by two. The Cowboys travel to play the Arizona Cardinals at home on Sunday, followed by a matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.
