Democrat Eli Savit holds a slight lead over Republican Doug Lloyd in the race for Michigan attorney general, according to recent polling data. The polls closed at 8 p.m. in most of the state, though some locations in the Upper Peninsula remained open until 9 p.m. due to time zone differences.

The election determines who will succeed Dana Nessel, a Democrat whose term ends this year. The candidates represent distinct approaches to the role. Lloyd, a Republican, describes himself as a traditional prosecutor focused on tough crime enforcement. Savit, a Democrat, emphasizes criminal justice reform.

Savit has served as Washtenaw County’s prosecutor since 2020. He stated he would prioritize consumer protection and continue pursuing white-collar crimes such as wage theft, price gouging, and fraud. He also supports specific gun control measures, including bans on bump stocks and ghost guns, and endorses Michigan’s existing safe storage and red flag laws.

Lloyd, who has served as Eaton County prosecutor for more than two decades, touts his experience and trusted leadership. He noted that his home county is politically divided and that he won reelection by appealing to moderate voters. He supports repealing the state’s red flag law and wants the Legislature to adopt a constitutional carry law that would allow residents to carry concealed weapons without a permit.

Democrats argue that Lloyd would effectively act as a rubber stamp for decisions made during the final two years of President Donald Trump’s administration. Republicans criticized Savit for his policies as county prosecutor, which included decriminalizing consensual sex work and psychedelic mushrooms, as well as limiting the use of cash bail.

Savit outraised Lloyd in the campaign, reporting $2.3 million in cumulative donations compared to Lloyd’s $1.2 million. Despite the fundraising advantage, Savit and Lloyd were in a statistical dead heat for much of the race. More recent polls show Savit with a small edge over his opponent.
