Alicia Silverstone has officially returned to the role of Cher Horowitz for a new event series on Paramount+.
The project is set approximately thirty years after the events of the 1995 original movie. In this timeline, Cher works as a successful businesswoman and balances her career while raising a teenage daughter. Silverstone will act in the lead role and also serve as an executive producer on the show.
Amy Heckerling, the writer and director of the 1995 film, returns to the project as an executive producer. Robert Lawrence, who produced the original feature, will also hold an executive producer credit. The creative team aims to expand the story of the character for both longtime fans and new audiences.
The series moved through several development stages before reaching its current home. Peacock ended its planned version of the sequel earlier this year. Following that cancellation, CBS Studios and Paramount continued to shop the material. The project eventually found a permanent home on the Paramount+ platform, where it received an official green light.
Production is expected to start in Los Angeles in 2027. Paramount+ has not yet announced additional casting decisions. This leaves open the possibility that other members of the original ensemble may return to the screen. The 1995 film featured Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya.
The franchise has seen other attempts to adapt the material in the past. A reboot focusing on the character Dionne never moved forward. A television adaptation aired from 1996 to 1999, with Rachel Blanchard portraying Cher in that version. Silverstone stated that the goal of revisiting the character is to honor what audiences love about Clueless while introducing a fresh chapter.
