The Internal Revenue Service published its annual inflation adjustments on Thursday, raising the income limits for long-term capital gains tax brackets for the 2027 tax year. The agency increased the thresholds for the 0%, 15%, and 20% rates, a change that directly affects how investors calculate tax liabilities on assets held for more than one year.

For single filers, taxable income up to $51,050 will be taxed at 0%. Married couples filing jointly can earn up to $102,100 before moving into the 15% bracket. The 15% rate applies to income between those lower limits and $563,200 for individuals. For married couples, the 15% bracket extends to $633,600. Taxpayers with taxable income above those amounts will pay the 20% rate, which starts at $563,201 for singles and $633,601 for married couples.

These updates follow a pattern of annual revisions where the IRS adjusts figures to account for inflation. By raising the ceilings, the agency prevents price increases from pushing taxpayers into higher tax brackets solely due to inflationary growth. The current tax rate tiers remain unchanged from previous years, but the expansion of the lower brackets allows more households to pay less on long-term investment gains.

The calculation of the applicable rate depends on taxable income, which is determined by subtracting deductions from adjusted gross income. To assist with this, the IRS also raised the standard deduction amounts for 2027. Single filers will see their standard deduction increase to $16,600, up from $16,100. Married couples filing jointly will receive a standard deduction of $33,200, an increase from the previous $32,200. These higher deduction figures reduce the taxable income for many taxpayers, potentially keeping them within the lower capital gains brackets.

The new figures arrive as investors manage portfolios that have seen years of growth mixed with recent market volatility. The updated brackets may influence decisions regarding when to sell assets or rebalance portfolios in 2027, as such actions trigger tax events. The agency also updated dozens of other provisions, including federal income tax brackets and estate tax exemptions, alongside the capital gains changes.

Tax professionals and investors will need to reference these new numbers when planning financial moves for the coming year. The interplay between the increased standard deduction and the higher capital gains thresholds will determine the final tax liability for many households. The release serves as the latest in a series of annual updates intended to align the tax code with current economic conditions.

The agency noted that the adjustments help keep pace with rising costs in housing, groceries, and gasoline. The updated figures ensure that the tax system reflects current economic realities without automatic bracket creep. Investors should review these specific income limits when calculating potential tax burdens on long-term gains.
