The security environment for high-profile political figures in Tel Aviv tightened on Saturday night after a man was detained for physically engaging with a member of Naftali Bennett's protection team. The incident occurred while the former prime minister was attending a public assembly in the city, providing a direct change to the immediate safety protocols surrounding such events.
The suspect, a 23-year-old resident of Givatayim, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when the disturbance began. According to initial reports, he attempted to breach the cordon of staff surrounding Bennett while vocalizing a slogan supporting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The phrase he used was "Only Bibi," a chant frequently associated with the current administration's backers.
Despite verbal commands from the security detail to maintain distance, the man continued to push forward. The protective barrier was established to keep the crowd at a specific range from Bennett. When the guards physically redirected him to uphold the perimeter, the suspect did not retreat as instructed. Instead, he turned to confront the officer who had moved him, resulting in a shove that escalated the situation from a verbal dispute to a physical one.
Following the exchange, the security team quickly restrained the individual to prevent further disruption. They held him in place at the venue while contacting law enforcement. Officers responded to the park location, where they formally arrested the suspect and transported him to a local station for preliminary questioning and processing.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the man has no prior criminal history. Investigators are currently reviewing the specific details of the encounter to determine the extent of the contact and the state of the suspect's sobriety at the time. The case remains under active examination by police.
This event takes place against the backdrop of an upcoming electoral cycle. Bennett, who held the office of prime minister from June 2021 until June 2022, was present at the rally to advocate for the creation of a commission of inquiry. The goal of such a body would be to examine the failures that preceded the October 7 massacre.
The timing of the arrest is notable as it occurs just days before the national elections scheduled for 2026. Military personnel have already begun casting their ballots at designated polling stations earlier in the week, signaling the start of the broader voting process.
