Indiana Democrats secured a historic win Tuesday night when Beau Bayh defeated Republican Max Engling for secretary of state. The result breaks a decade long streak of Republican control over statewide elections in the state.
According to Decision Desk HQ, Bayh finished with 51.7 percent of the vote while Engling received 42.6 percent. Engling conceded the race around 11:30 p.m. at a Republican watch party in Indianapolis.
Bayh, the son of former Senator Evan Bayh, addressed supporters at a hotel in downtown Indianapolis. He declared that Hoosiers voted for change and that too many decisions had previously been made behind closed doors by insiders. He stated that voters finally said enough is enough.
The campaign focused on attracting moderate and conservative voters. Bayh emphasized his military background and pledged to bring greater accountability to the office. This strategy appeared to resonate in Republican leaning areas of central and southern Indiana. Those regions included counties that heavily supported President Trump in the 2024 election.
The race became a contested battleground after incumbent Diego Morales was denied renomination at the state GOP convention in June. Morales faced a series of controversies during his tenure before stepping aside. Engling secured the Republican nomination but ran against a crowded field.
Other candidates included former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, who ran under the newly formed Lincoln Party banner, and Libertarian Lauri Shillings. The election results show Bayh gaining ground beyond traditional Democratic strongholds like Marion and Lake counties.
Engling told supporters that the voters made their decision and it was not what they wanted. He wished Bayh success for the good of all Hoosiers in Indiana.
