A man suffered critical injuries to his neck and back late Tuesday evening when a dispute on a Chicago Transit Authority platform turned physical.
Chicago police reported that the incident occurred around 8:25 p.m. on the CTA Blue Line platform in the 1200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue. Officers stated that the victim, whose age was not immediately available, engaged in an argument with another man. The verbal exchange escalated into a physical altercation during which the suspect struck the victim with a sharp object.
Emergency responders transported the injured man to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. Police took the other man into custody at the scene, though charges remain pending as Area Five detectives continue their investigation. Officials have not yet determined the specific cause of the initial argument.
The stabbing coincides with ongoing safety initiatives by the CTA and Cook County. The transit agency launched its Safe Ride Specialist program last week, which deploys trained teams for crisis and violence intervention. Additionally, Cook County sheriff’s deputies have been added to track patrols earlier this year, and the City Council is expected to vote on renewing the Chicago Police Department’s transit safety contract.
City data indicates that overall crimes on the CTA system have decreased by approximately 28 percent this year. The incident adds to the scrutiny of transit security measures as the agency works to reduce violence on its routes.
