U.S. Senator Ted Cruz stood on the Formula One podium in Austin and endured loud, continuous booing from the crowd at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday. The Republican lawmaker served as the official trophy presenter for the U.S. Grand Prix. Video footage captured the sustained noise as Cruz prepared to hand the first-place award to Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli. The jeering stopped almost immediately after the senator placed the trophy in the winner's hands. The crowd then erupted into cheers, a sharp shift that identified Cruz as the specific target of the disapproval.
David "Crofty" Croft, a Formula One commentator for Sky Sports, noted the vocal reaction during the live broadcast. "Midterms are coming up; people are already voting with their voice," Croft said. Although Cruz is not currently on the ballot for the upcoming midterm elections, political observers suggest he is already positioning himself for a second presidential run. The senator's presence at the race drew negative reactions even before the podium ceremony. Social media posts from attendees indicated that booing began when Cruz was announced as a dignitary attending the event.
Cruz addressed the event on social media on Sunday without referencing the audible backlash. He described the day as a personal outing with his daughter, Caroline. "Incredible day at the Austin Grand Prix with Caroline. Perfect Dad-daughter afternoon," Cruz wrote on X. He added, "The eyes of the racing world were on Texas. Congrats to Kimi Antonelli on a huge win. It was an honor to present the championship trophy."
This incident follows a similar pattern of public reception for the senator in Texas. During an interview on ESPN's College Game Day on Sept. 12, Cruz faced booing from a stadium crowd while promoting the "Protect College Sports Act." The bill was scheduled to take place ahead of the Texas Longhorns football game against Ohio State. The legislation has already passed the Senate but awaits final approval in the House. Critics of the bill argue it limits student athlete earnings and restricts unionization efforts.
The race in Austin concluded with Kimi Antonelli securing the win. Cruz's appearance marked one of his recent public engagements in his home state. The event drew national attention due to the visible tension between the senator and the racing audience. The shift from boos to cheers on the podium underscored the crowd's focused sentiment. No further public comments from Cruz regarding the specific noise levels were issued by the time of reporting.
