Apple priced its first folding smartphone, the iPhone Duo, at $1,999 on October 23, 2026. The launch comes seven years after Samsung introduced the Galaxy Fold to the market. While the hardware has been refined in the interim, the pricing positions the device firmly in the premium segment of the mobile industry.

The device features a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display. This new form factor creates immediate challenges for the software ecosystem. Many third-party applications have not yet been optimized for the dual-screen layout. On the unupgraded apps, content appears as a narrow strip in the center of the screen, flanked by thick black bars. Apple has redesigned its own native applications to fit the new dimensions, but developers like Slack, Instagram, DoorDash, and WhatsApp are only now releasing updates for iOS 27.1. Even among these updated titles, interface elements remain broken in some cases. Apple has also moved navigation controls to a right-side rail, abandoning the bottom-centered layout used on previous iPhones.

The iPhone Duo marks a hardware shift by dropping Face ID. The device relies on Touch ID, with the sensor located on the right edge. Apple attributes this change to the device's thin profile. This is the first time a flagship iPhone has used fingerprint authentication, though the technology remains on the iPhone SE, iPads, and MacBooks. The Dynamic Island feature persists, relocated to the top-right edge near the outer selfie camera.

Accessory compatibility presents new mechanical issues for the market. While the phone supports MagSafe, its uneven weight distribution causes it to tilt when attached to car docks or tripods in the unfolded state. Third-party manufacturers may need to develop anti-rotation magnets to correct this. Magnetic wallets also do not align flush with the bottom edge due to the device's shorter height. Apple has not released an official accessory to bridge this gap.

Repair costs and hardware care define the total cost of ownership. Apple warns that the matte nano-texture finish on the inner screen is integral to the device and should not be removed. Replacing a damaged finish costs $19 in warranty or $49 out of warranty. A cracked inner display costs $999 to replace without AppleCare+ coverage. The company is set to add support for the USB-C Apple Pencil via a software update later this year, allowing for stylus use on the textured screen, though the device lacks a physical storage slot for the accessory.

The iPhone Duo is currently back-ordered for several weeks. This delay may allow developers to finalize their software updates before many consumers receive their hardware. Apple states that the keyboard can currently be split for easier typing on the wide display, and future updates will introduce Reachability and Pencil support to complete the multitasking workflow.
