Latvia’s National Armed Forces announced on Saturday that they recovered the wreckage of an unmanned aerial vehicle in the Alūksne district. The military stated that the drone most likely crossed into Latvian airspace on October 18, seven days before the debris was located.
The incident initially surfaced after residents reported a loud noise resembling an explosion. The National Armed Forces and State Police began a search for a crash site immediately. That operation was suspended after two days because authorities lacked sufficient information to determine what had occurred. The search resumed, leading to the discovery on Saturday.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances of the crash. The military also launched an internal review to assess how the incident unfolded. Officials confirmed that no civilians were injured and that civilian infrastructure sustained no damage. They have not identified any additional threats to the area.
The discovery follows a similar event in neighboring Lithuania. On October 18, the same day the Latvian drone entered airspace, debris from a suspected drone was found in Juodžionys, a village in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian officials stated the aircraft entered their airspace from Poland.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said the drone contained explosives. Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. Tykhyi added that Ukraine expressed regret over the event.
