A 36-year-old British mother has died in the Bahamas after a strong current separated her from her two sons while the family was snorkeling.
Royal Bahamas Police Force officials reported that the incident occurred on Tuesday near the southern point of Bimini island. The woman, identified as being from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was swimming with her husband and children when the water shifted. The force stated that the current initially pulled both boys away. As the mother attempted to swim toward them, the current also carried her from the group. Rescue teams later recovered the two boys from the water safely.
Police received a call shortly after 10:00 a.m. alerting officers at the Alice Town station that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. First responders administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the dock before transporting the woman to the local clinic. A physician pronounced her dead there despite medical efforts to revive her. The force is conducting an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
The investigation into the sudden death is ongoing. Police have stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that officials are in contact with local authorities. The spokesperson said the ministry is providing support to the family of the deceased.
The woman's husband and two sons remain in the area. The boys were the first to be pulled into the deeper water by the Bimini current. Their mother entered the water to assist them, becoming the third person affected by the strong flow.
