The Detroit Lions defeated the Minnesota Vikings 19-15 at Ford Field on Sunday, handing the Vikings their first loss of the season. Detroit trailed by one game in the NFC North standings after the result, but holds the head-to-head tiebreaker for their rematch in Minnesota in December.
Jahmyr Gibbs carried the offense with a 153-yard rushing performance. He scored on a 30-yard run after breaking loose from tacklers. Sione Vaki added 65 rushing yards on 11 carries, a contribution that eased concerns about Gibbs' heavy workload. Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing leaned heavily on the run game in the second half, which set the tone for Detroit's scoring drives.
Quarterback Jared Goff navigated a difficult defensive front, throwing his first interception of the season when Jameson Williams slipped out of his break. Goff was sacked four times during the team's first five series. He found his rhythm after halftime, throwing a game-winning touchdown to Williams on a crossing route with under five minutes remaining. Goff also sealed the victory with a quarterback sneak for a first down on the final drive.
The defense applied consistent pressure on Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray. Aidan Hutchinson recorded multiple pressures, including one that forced a fourth-quarter incompletion. Skyler Gill-Howard recorded his first career solo sack, while Alim McNeill added a sack in the third quarter. The unit struggled in the first half, allowing a large gain on the first play of the game to Ben Yurosek.
Injuries altered the defensive lineup significantly. DJ Wonnum left with a head injury after a collision with Brian Branch. Jack Campbell suffered a neck injury in the fourth quarter and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Jimmy Rolder also exited the game on the same play, ending a career-best performance where he recorded five tackles, two for loss, and his first sack.
Special teams provided mixed results. Jake Bates missed a field goal attempt that hit the left upright, though he had previously made kicks from 25 and 37 yards. Punter Jack Fox averaged 46.5 yards on four attempts. The Lions' secondary limited Justin Jefferson to five catches for 33 yards, though D.J. Reed recorded his first interception of the season in the second quarter.
All-Pro guard Penei Sewell drew four penalties, including two for holding and two pre-snap infractions. Cade Mays left with an ankle injury, and Juice Scruggs replaced him at center. The Lions will face the Miami Dolphins next before traveling to Munich for a game against the New England Patriots.
