The final chapter of the Denis Villeneuve Dune saga arrives in theaters on December 18, capping a trilogy that has become a major franchise for the studio. To prepare audiences for the conclusion, the distributor is rereleasing the first two films starting next month. This strategy places the origin of the story back in front of moviegoers just weeks before the final act begins.
The first two films will screen as a double feature on IMAX screens on November 13. Individual screenings of each movie will be available from November 14 through November 18. These limited run dates create a specific window for viewers to refresh their memory before the new film opens.
Villeneuve directed the new entry and co-wrote the script with Brian K. Vaughan. The film is based on Frank Herbert's novel Dune Messiah. Timothee Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, joined by Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, and Isaach De Bankole. Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Javier Bardem also appear in the ensemble. New additions to the cast include Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke.
The narrative takes place nearly twenty years after Paul assumed control of the Imperium. The official synopsis describes Paul as a ruthless emperor facing the consequences of his rule. Old allies return while new threats emerge, forcing Paul to navigate a sweeping conspiracy. The plot centers on the cost of power and the fate of his loved ones.
AMC Theatres has announced two new popcorn bucket designs for fans of the franchise. The buckets are named the Sandworm Thumper and the Double Sandworm. They feature a working thumper mechanism, which is the device characters use to attract sandworms in the films. AMC states that the design includes multiple Shai-Hulud figures to facilitate popcorn sharing.
The studio released the official description of the film's plot, noting that Paul is haunted by visions of imperial collapse. He also sees the reappearance of his long-lost love. These visions draw him into a mystery with Chani at its center. Rebellion brews as enemies close in on the protagonist.
