Apple unveiled a hidden interactive element on its web player to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original iPod launch on October 23, 2001. The feature appears as a functional replica of the classic hardware device embedded within the site's error pages.
Users discovered the tribute by navigating to the specific URL music.apple.com/ipod or by typing a non-existent path into the music.apple.com address bar. Instead of the standard missing content message, the browser displays the virtual player. The interface responds to user input, allowing clicks on the control buttons and drag actions on the scroll wheel to mimic the physical device's navigation.
The digital unit contains a pre-installed playlist featuring artists who were popular at the product's 2001 debut. Selecting a track plays a 90-second preview directly in the web interface without requiring a separate application. The visual and functional design mirrors the original hardware, offering a direct recreation of the user experience from two decades ago.
Kian, a user on the social platform X, identified the feature and shared the discovery. While the company has not released a dedicated hardware music player in years, this web-based element provides a method for visitors to interact with the device's legacy design. The inclusion of the replica suggests the product maintains a presence in the memories of the brand's audience.
Apple has not announced any new hardware or product changes related to this anniversary. The web tribute serves as a standalone nod to the device's history. For subscribers who prefer streaming audio, the service remains available at a cost of $11.99 per month or as part of the Apple One bundle.
