Tesla released its third quarter financial results for 2026 after market close on October 21, 2026. The report details the company's performance regarding revenue, margins, and operational expenses for the period ending September 30, 2026.

Tesla reported revenue of $28.05 billion, which is essentially flat compared to the $28.1 billion reported in the third quarter of 2025. Non-GAAP earnings per share came in at $0.48, surpassing the consensus estimate of $0.45, though this figure is down 4% from the $0.50 per share reported a year ago. Total gross margin stood at 19.6%, an increase of 160 basis points from the 18.0% posted in the third quarter of 2025. Automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits reached 18.1%, rising from 16.3% in the second quarter of 2026.

Despite the recovery in gross margins, operating income declined significantly. Operating income fell 56% year-over-year to $718 million, resulting in an operating margin of 2.6%, compared to 5.8% in the prior year. On a GAAP basis, net income decreased 43% to $787 million, or $0.22 per share. Operating expenses totaled $4.78 billion, a 39% increase year-over-year, driven by research and development spending which grew 69% to $2.76 billion.

Capital spending for the quarter reached $4.73 billion, more than double the $2.25 billion spent in the same period last year. Through the first nine months of 2026, capital expenditures have totaled $13.01 billion. This figure is approximately half of the company's guidance of more than $25 billion for the full year. Free cash flow for the quarter was $1.53 billion, compared to $3.99 billion a year ago and negative $1.09 billion in the second quarter of 2026.

Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles during the quarter, a decrease of 2.1% compared to the third quarter of 2025. The company states that battery availability continued to be the limiting factor in increasing auto volumes. Energy generation and storage revenue declined 16% to $2.88 billion. Services and other revenue grew 33% to $4.61 billion, with the company reporting a record gross profit of $734 million for that segment.
