Ryleigh Schoonover has officially joined the Fresno State women's basketball program, marking the start of her collegiate career just miles from where she became a local legend. The former Clovis West standout is entering her freshman season with the Bulldogs, bringing with her the disciplined habits and competitive drive that defined her high school tenure. Her arrival completes a talented incoming class for the university, signaling a strong start for the team as it prepares for the upcoming season.
Schoonover is stepping out of a program that has established itself as a dominant force in Central Valley high school athletics. For the past fourteen years, the Clovis West Golden Eagles have secured consecutive Central Section championships. This long run of success has made winning a baseline expectation rather than a yearly goal. Head coach Craig Campbell explained that the team aims to stay competitive every single season, even if they do not capture the title. He stated, "We want to be good every year," and noted that while they may not win annually, they intend to keep knocking on the door for the championship.
Despite the high level of competition, Schoonover chose to stay close to home instead of traveling far for college. She believes playing for Fresno State holds a unique significance for players from the region. Schoonover described the experience of wearing the valley "V" on her jersey as a distinct honor that outsiders often fail to appreciate. For her, representing the local college is a way to continue her roots while competing at a higher level.
Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy has already recognized the impact of the new recruit. He praised Schoonover's ability to adapt to the college game immediately upon arrival. McCarthy stated, "In my opinion, Riley was the best player in the area for her class of 2026," and added that she proved his assessment correct right away. Her quick integration into the team reflects the confidence the coaching staff has in her abilities.
The move from high school to the Pac-12 comes with a shift in expectations. Schoonover arrives with a background of winning section titles at Clovis West, a history that aligns with Fresno State's own pursuit of a conference championship. She credits her former high school coach for preparing her for the rigorous standards of the college program. Schoonover noted that the culture of excellence is consistent at both levels, stating, "Everything is the standard." This mindset allows her to transition smoothly into the faster pace of college basketball.
Coach McCarthy emphasized that Schoonover's experience in a winning program has readied her for the demands of college play. He explained that her time at Clovis West, where winning was the norm, has set a high bar for her performance. McCarthy said, "She played with a very good high school basketball program here, and all they did was win." Consequently, that same expectation of victory is what the team looks for when she steps onto the court.
The team's season is approaching rapidly, with the opener against UC Merced scheduled for less than two weeks from now. Schoonover is currently preparing for her first game at the Save Mart Center, a familiar venue for many in the community. Her debut will be a key moment for the program as it looks to establish its identity for the new season.
Looking ahead, Campbell believes his former player still has significant room for growth. He expressed excitement about the potential Schoonover holds for the Bulldogs. Campbell said, "I think that's one of the things that's so exciting for Coach McCarthy and the staff is she's just scratching the surface on what a gifted player she could be for them." The former coach remains confident that her talent will continue to develop as she navigates her first year in college.
As the season draws near, the focus shifts to how Schoonover's local expertise and high school success translate to the collegiate stage. Her journey from the Clovis West gym to the Fresno State locker room represents a bridge between two eras of Central Valley basketball. The team and its fans are eager to see how her background in sustained success will influence the Bulldogs' performance in the coming months.
