Early AI Bettors Bank Massive Gains Ahead of Anthropic Listing
Venture capital firms and individual investors are sitting on multi-billion dollar stakes in the AI lab, with some positions multiplying by over ninety times since their initial entries.

The artificial intelligence sector is approaching a pivotal moment as one of its most significant players prepares to enter the public markets. Anthropic is expected to complete its initial public offering within the current year, potentially reaching a valuation of two trillion dollars. This move will transform the private equity landscape for the company, turning paper gains into liquid assets for the numerous investors who backed the startup during its early and mature stages. While the full financial impact of the listing will not be known until the shares are traded, the current private market valuation offers a clear snapshot of the immense wealth already accumulated by the lab's backers.
According to data reported by Bloomberg, many of the venture capital firms and individual investors who supported Anthropic now hold stakes worth billions of dollars. This is the case even at the company's most recent private valuation, which stands at 965 billion dollars. The disparity between the entry prices of early investors and the current valuation highlights the rapid appreciation of assets in the AI space. For these backers, the upcoming IPO represents a potential windfall that could further double or triple their existing holdings, depending on the final pricing of the public offering.
One of the most notable figures in this group is Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. Schmidt participated in the company's Series A funding round back in 2021, at a time when the startup was valued at just 461 million dollars. Data from PitchBook indicates that his initial investment has since grown into a position representing approximately one percent of the entire company. At the current private valuation, that single percent stake translates to a holding worth nearly ten billion dollars, demonstrating the explosive growth trajectory that early adopters have experienced in the sector.
Late-stage institutional investors have also seen substantial returns, though their entry points were significantly higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a check for six billion dollars to Anthropic just last year. At that time, the company was already valued at 183 billion dollars. Despite the high entry price, that late-stage bet is currently worth seventeen billion dollars. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double in value once the company completes its public listing, a testament to the continued confidence in the firm's trajectory among major financial players.
Menlo Ventures holds another significant position in the company, having led the Series D funding round. Over the course of the company's development, the firm has invested more than one billion dollars into Anthropic. Today, that aggregate investment translates to a stake valued at fourteen billion dollars. This substantial return underscores the role of mid-stage venture capital firms in scaling AI startups from promising research operations into global market leaders with significant financial footprints.
Sequoia, a well-known name in venture capital, joined the roster of Anthropic investors more recently, making its first investment earlier this year. By the time Sequoia entered, the AI lab was already valued at 380 billion dollars. The firm invested three billion dollars, which secured it approximately one percent ownership of the company. Although this is a later entry point compared to earlier rounds, Sequoia's investment has already more than doubled in value, reflecting the steady upward revaluation of the firm in the private market over the past few months.
Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a meaningful stake in the company. The firm initially invested thirty-five million dollars in Anthropic's Series C round in 2023. Following that initial commitment, Sound Ventures funneled an additional four hundred million dollars into the company. This combined investment has resulted in a holding that is now worth billions of dollars. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the original investment remains with the company.
Perhaps the most striking example of return on investment belongs to Spark Capital. This firm is the only venture capital group known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. Spark Capital invested seventy-five million dollars during the 2023 Series C round, when the company's valuation stood at five billion dollars. Since that entry point, the value of its position has ballooned more than ninety times. Today, that initial seventy-five million dollar investment is worth approximately seven billion dollars, a multiplier that illustrates the extreme upside potential for investors who identified the company's value before it became a household name.
The upcoming IPO will serve as the final test for these valuations, potentially locking in these gains for the investors. While the private market has already rewarded these backers with substantial paper wealth, the public listing could provide a liquidity event of historic proportions. For the broader tech industry, the success of this offering will signal whether the market can sustain such high valuations for AI infrastructure companies. As the listing date approaches, all eyes will be on how the public market prices Anthropic relative to its private peers and how the various stakeholders react to the final share price.
